Champagne glasses & sparkling wine glasses
A champagne glass, sparkling wine glass, or champagne flute is a drinking glass specifically used for sparkling wines such as Sekt, Prosecco, or Champagne. These glasses are available in various shapes, including flutes, tulips, goblets, and coupes.
- Sparkling wine tulip : The term "sparkling wine tulip" generally refers to very tall, conical sparkling wine glasses with a relatively short stem. The name "tulip" refers to the glass's relatively tall, narrow tulip shape. This champagne glass typically holds 15 cl. It is also a popular choice for serving champagne cocktails and aperitifs.
- Sparkling wine flutes : This goblet shape has been known in France since 1800. The shape is quite slender and its rim is slightly flared. The long stem of the sparkling wine flute is designed to prevent the sparkling wine from warming up too much through contact with the hand. Therefore, sparkling wine flutes, like white wine glasses, are usually held by the stem, or some even only by the base. Other glass shapes, such as the sparkling wine tulip, are often also referred to as flutes.
- Sparkling wine coupes : These are often also called champagne coupes or coupes. Unlike sparkling wine flutes or tulips, this glass shape is not tall and narrow. It is a shallow bowl shape with a frequently slender stem. The shape is therefore wider than it is tall. Sparkling wine coupes were particularly popular in the 1960s and 1970s.
Sparkling wine glasses and champagne glasses are generally very similar, but there are a few differences in terms of shape and size:
- Shape : Sparkling wine glasses generally have a wider opening and a larger bowl than champagne glasses to better develop the aromas of the sparkling wine and provide space for the bubbles. Champagne glasses generally have a narrow opening and a narrow bowl to concentrate the aromas of the champagne and better preserve the bubbles.
- Size : Sparkling wine glasses generally have a larger capacity than champagne glasses to allow you to drink more sparkling wine at once. Champagne glasses are usually smaller and have a capacity of just over 180ml.
- Material : Sparkling wine and champagne glasses are usually made of crystal or tempered glass to better preserve the bubbles and aromas of the wine.
However, it is important to note that there are also special glasses for champagne called flutes, which have a very narrow and tall shape in order to preserve the bubbles for longer.
