Discover the Donnafugata winery – a symbiosis of art, history, and winemaking. Welcome to Contessa Entellina, where art, history, and literature merge in a unique symbiosis. Here, in the picturesque hills of western Sicily, the Donnafugata winery was born, inspired by the settings of Tomasi di Lampedusa's novel "The Fleeing Woman" (Donna in fuga). But it is also the story of Gabriella, a pioneer of women-led quality winemaking, who left her mark here.

Unique terroir for exceptional wines

Donnafugata's vineyards are situated on hillsides between 200 and 600 meters above sea level. The soils are predominantly clay with a subalkaline pH of 7.5 to 7.9 and are rich in nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, manganese, and zinc. The limestone content ranges from 20 to 35%. These unique soil conditions contribute significantly to the character of the wines.

The vineyard – tradition and innovation in harmony

Donnafugata's vineyards utilize the cordon training system with spur pruning. Three to five spurs, each with two buds, are pruned from each vine. Planting density varies between 4,500 and 6,000 vines per hectare, with yields ranging from 4,000 to 8,500 kg/ha (equivalent to 0.8 to 1.7 kg/vine). These methods combine traditional techniques with modern expertise to produce the finest grapes.

Ideal climate for aromatic grapes

The Mediterranean climate in Contessa Entellina is characterized by mild winters and dry, windy summers. The large temperature differences between day and night (16-18°C) create ideal conditions for producing healthy, aromatic, and fully ripened grapes. The average annual rainfall over the last ten years is 670 mm, with the majority of the precipitation falling in autumn and winter.

Sustainability as a guiding principle

Donnafugata places great emphasis on sustainability and a deep connection with nature. The goal is to produce quality wines that are created in harmony with their environment. Our credo is: "From vineyard to bottle, there is no quality without sustainability." This philosophy permeates all processes of viticulture and winemaking and is reflected in every glass of Donnafugata.
