On a hill overlooking the small village of Cahuzac-sur-Vere lies DomaineBosc Long , dominated by its striking, over 100-year-old cedar tree. Here, in the heart of the Gaillac wine region, 60 km northeast of Toulouse, the grapes for our distinctive and characterful wines grow and ripen.

The estate was founded in 1855 by a great opera lover. Domaine de Bosc Long has been German-owned since the 1970s. The vineyards cover an area of over 50 hectares, situated on the hills of the Premier Côtes de Gaillac, the most prestigious sites in the region. The calcareous and clay soils allow us to produce aromatic and refined wines.

Today, Bosc Long features internationally renowned grape varieties such as Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon blanc and Chardonnay, as well as the autochthonous regional varieties Braucol, Duras, Mauzac, Loin de Loeil and Muscadelle.

The Gaillac wine region lies on the eastern edge of the Aquitaine Basin. To the northwest is the Grésigne mountain range, which blocks some of the oceanic influences in summer. The Montagne Noir mountain range forms a natural barrier to the Mediterranean Sea. Gaillac therefore has a unique microclimate, characterized by hot, dry summers and abundant rainfall in winter, providing excellent conditions for viticulture. This favorable climate, with its heavy winter rains and warm, dry summers, makes it ideal for growing grapes. We harvest our grapes at their optimal ripeness to achieve a balanced ratio of fruit, acidity, and sugar.

In the cellar, less is often more. Experience and knowledge are often more important than any technical innovation. We carefully guide and support our wines during their development, allowing authentic wines to emerge that leave a lasting impression.

All our red wines are produced using traditional maceration. The long contact time with the grape skins gives our wines immense depth of color, spicy and powerful fruit aromas, and a stable tannin structure.

The reserve red wines , as well as the top wines of a vintage from Bosc Long , mature in small oak barrels, because good wines need time – only then can they reach their full potential. The goal is always a perfect harmony of fruit, elegance, and power, as well as an aging potential of at least 10-20 years.

The white and rosé wines are gently and quickly pressed after a short contact time and then fermented at a cool temperature to preserve freshness and fruitiness.

About the author Andreas Rips

Andreas Rips from Domaine Bosc Long

Andreas Rips is a native of the Ruhr region. He developed a passion for viticulture at the age of 19. After completing his winemaking apprenticeship in the winegrowing community of Schweigen-Rechtenbach in the southern Palatinate, near the German Wine Gate in Rhineland-Palatinate, he undertook further technical training as a journeyman at the state teaching and research institute for viticulture and fruit growing in Weinzberg.

Andreas Rips then worked for several years as a cellar master at various German wineries and cooperatives. In 2010, as a board member of the Bottwartal Winery cooperative, he visited the then head of the school department at his former school in Weinzberg. The head of the school reported that a German family of entrepreneurs had acquired the French winery Domaine Bosc Long in 2006 and were looking for a proactive cellar master.

Today Andreas Rips lives near Heilbronn and is responsible for cellar management and sales in Germany at the Domaine Bosc Long winery.
