This Biondi-Santi Rosso di Montalcino was originally known as Biondi-Santi "White Label Brunello," but changed its name in 1983 when the Rosso di Montalcino DOC was introduced. It reflects the characteristic style of our high-altitude vineyards, with a vibrant freshness and pronounced fruitiness that makes it a true delight even when young.
2018 was a rather cool year, characterized by abundant rainfall that accompanied the entire growth cycle of the vines. Overall, the summer was marked by below-average temperatures. Shortly before the harvest of the grapes in our high-altitude vineyards, a healthy northerly wind helped to dry the vines and grapes for a week, preparing them for harvest. The harvest began on September 16th and lasted eight days, during which a careful selection of the best grapes was made. The Rosso di Montalcino is produced exclusively from our own vineyards. For aging, the Rosso di Montalcino is matured for 12 months in Slavonian oak barrels.
The honest and clean Rosso di Montalcino reveals aromas of small red berries, the kind we find in the forest in summer: raspberries, wild strawberries, and red currants, but also sour cherries, so typical of Sangiovese from a cool vintage, immediately complemented by lovely violet scents and a hint of herbs. On the palate, it displays its full energy with a vibrant freshness and a focused, fruity core with fine-grained tannins that lead to a fragrant and wonderfully spicy finish. An elegant vintage [WoA].
